![]() ![]() “Rap is the new rock ‘n’ roll.” You can hear that mentality in the title of the late 2016 No. “We culture,” Kanye West said in 2013, stating what even then wasn’t a very controversial opinion. But more relevantly, they join a class of rappers going out of their way to take unlikely inspiration from the rock canon. By comparing themselves to rock stars, Malone and 21 Savage join a rich lyrical lineage that includes Run-D.M.C’s “King of Rock” in 1985 and Danny Brown’s “Die Like a Rockstar” in 2011. “Rockstar” also is on trend in demonstrating rap’s fascination with rock and roll, which rap recently dethroned as the most-listened-to genre in America. 1s was 2006, the era of Nelly, Sean Paul, and Chamillionaire. 1 songs that 2017 has produced, Billboard points out, half have been rap songs, and each of those has been the first Hot 100 conquerer by the artist that produced it (Migos, Kendrick Lamar, DJ Khaled, Cardi B, and now Post Malone). ![]() He’s an R&B singer and rapper, making hazily melodic hits during a commercial boom for hip-hop. He is not, by many definitions, a rock star. Its lyrics read like a checklist of references to its title genre’s history: “Rest in Peace, Bon Scott,” “Light a fire like Morrison,” “I’m with the band.” For the oozing, weightless chorus, the 22-year-old who goes by Post Malone croaks that he “feels just like a rock star.” 1 songs, from Elton John’s “Crocodile Rock” in 1973 to Joan Jett & the Blackhearts’ “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” in 1982 to this week’s new chart-topper: Post Malone’s “Rockstar” featuring 21 Savage. I actually like the spiderman song a lot, but if you didn't tell me it was Post Malone on it I wouldn't of known, you could of subbed him out for anyone and it wouldn't of mattered. In the history of the Billboard Hot 100, the word rock has appeared in the names of 12 No. ![]() I've legit only heard 3 songs from him, white iverson, rockstar or whatever, and that spiderman song. There are thousands of shitty millionaires in the world, don't see a reason to hate on him over anyone else. Just know that in five years, no ones gonna give a shit who he is, for better or for worse, so theres no point getting mad about it. Among other dumbass things he's said, like "our votes don't matter", but I'm sure that's a lot of dumbass early 20 somethings. So he gets the culture vulture label, which he might be, probably. But for a lot of people it's prob because of the comment he made about rap not being able to convey emotion or something. He's just another sound cloud rapper but he hit it big, most likely because he's white, let's be realģ. I feel like most of the hate Post Malone get's is becauseĢ. It may not be a year from now, two or five, but in the future he will take his millions of dollars, get lazer surgery to remove his face tattoo's and denounce his "wild and crazy 20's" as just a phase when he steps into the realm of country and abandons one spotlight for another. other pop artists do their own thing and are completely vanilla earworm music. he deserves all of the hate and vitriol he gets because he's a theif. he's using the imagery of black artists, a lot of whom will never be able to leave their regional fame or lack thereof while he copies their style (pathetically) and takes in millions of dollars and adoring fans while completely half assing "the work" he does. he doesn't give a fuck about the culture, the people who created it and the language he adopted to make himself millions of dollars. This seems to be a fundamental either misunderstanding or completely ignoring the point that Post Malone has proven time and time again that he doesn't actually give a fuck about hip-hop. Because those other artists didn't shit on the art form they're reaping money and rewards from and throwing other contemporary artists under the bus. ![]()
